"I wanted to be number one in the nightlife industry"… Shim Tae-yoon, from entertainment industry slump to the life of a prodigal son ('Can't Go')
Former singer and businessman Shim Tae-yoon candidly revealed his past obsession with Gangnam's nightlife.
On the YouTube channel "Lee Sung-mi's Can't Go" on the 8th, Shim Tae-yoon candidly confessed everything from the days he enjoyed popularity after debuting as a singer to the turning point that changed the direction of his life.
Shim Tae-yoon recalled that he received a lot of attention even before his debut as a singer in 1999. He confessed, "Even before I was a celebrity, I mingled with them and lived like a semi-celebrity, enjoying everything. I had no 'hungry.' I lived relying only on my talent without putting in any effort."
He continued to blame himself, saying, "I acted like a veteran singer with ten albums when I was only a first-album artist. Looking back now, I was truly immature." He revealed that after voluntarily ending his variety show activities, he performed under the name "STA" to be recognized as a musician.
Shim Tae-yoon said, "I created and released ballad music, and it ended up being used for drama OSTs; everything I touched seemed to do well. With the 'Princess Hours' OST becoming a hit, I thought things would continue to go well." However, he confessed that the emptiness in his heart grew as his performance did not live up to his expectations.
"I felt hollow inside. I should have gone to church to fill that void, but instead, I entered the nightlife industry," he revealed. He continued, "I wandered around Apgujeong-dong and Cheongdam-dong, wanting to achieve in that world what I couldn't in the entertainment industry," adding, "I thought I had to be number one, even if it was just here."
At the time, Shim Tae-yoon also achieved success as a businessman in the center of Gangnam's nightlife scene. He explained, "I started an indoor street food stall in Apgujeong-dong, and it became a hot spot where celebrities and famous people in Gangnam gathered," adding, "As the business went so well, I expanded into a karaoke bar."
He recalled, "From then on, my life as a prodigal son began in earnest," stating, "I went to work at 5 PM and worked until dawn, then spent the day sleeping, exercising, and enjoying the nightlife."
However, even his dazzling success could not fill that emptiness. Shim Tae-yoon said, "When you live doing whatever you want, you eventually face an unfillable emptiness," adding, "I didn't understand why my heart felt hollow even though I was living so freely."
He reached a turning point in his life when he met actor Cha In-pyo. Shim recalled, "Before that, the older brothers I thought were cool were those who had a lot of money, had many women, or were accumulating assets," adding, "But Cha In-pyo told me, 'Let's do work to save lives together.'"
He continued, "I heard him talk about organizing a concert to help children affected by the earthquake, and it felt so refreshing," adding, "In a world where even the wealthy are trying to make more money, talking about saving lives seemed so cool."
He also said, "When I visited Cha In-pyo's house, I was shocked to see the children freely touching their father's cell phone," adding, "I thought I was living freely, but I realized that true freedom is living without anything to hide."
Shim Tae-yoon stated, "My life began to change at the age of 32. Since then, I have been meditating on the Bible every single day for 19 years," adding, "I am learning to live a life sufficient with Jesus."
Meanwhile, Shim Tae-yoon married a former ballerina 12 years his junior in 2014 and they have a son. Recently, he has been sharing updates on his life as a restaurateur.
