“Not polite” vs. “The intention matters”: Kim Ji-young causes a stir with her funeral attire for the late Choi Bul-am
Actress Kim Ji-young visited the wake of the late Choi Bul-am with her husband, Nam Sung-jin, sparking a heated debate online regarding her attire. Apart from the heartfelt tribute to the deceased, netizens are divided on whether her attire was appropriate.
Recently, attention has been drawn on online communities and social media to Kim Ji-young's appearance when she visited Choi Bul-am's wake at the Seoul Asan Medical Center on the 30th of last month.
At the time, Kim Ji-young wore a black leather biker jacket and carried a shoulder bag adorned with a gold chain. As photos of her wearing colored makeup were released, some netizens criticized her, stating that her attire was inappropriate for a funeral.
They argued that since a funeral is a solemn occasion to mourn the deceased, one should dress as neatly and calmly as possible. In particular, the reaction is that even if she wore black clothing, the leather jacket and the eye-catching gold-decorated bag did not match the atmosphere of a funeral. One netizen pointed out, "Even if she couldn't change clothes due to her schedule, couldn't she have at least left her bag in the car?"
On the other hand, there are strong counterarguments that the criticism directed at Kim Ji-young is excessive. They argue that since she likely rushed to the funeral home after hearing the news of the death while filming or on a personal schedule, the sincerity of her condolences should not be judged solely by her attire. Other netizens defended her, saying, "Isn't the important thing that she came in person to mourn the deceased despite her busy schedule?" and "It is excessive to take issue with every single detail of a mourner's clothing."
Kim Ji-young and Nam Sung-jin shared a special bond with the deceased. The two appeared as Bok-gil and Young-nam, respectively, in the long-running drama *Country Diaries*, working alongside Choi Bul-am. Their connection with the deceased was particularly special as the two, who developed a romantic relationship on set, even married in real life. Kim Ji-young, who visited the funeral parlor, teared up as she addressed the deceased, saying, “He was such a precious and valuable person to us, and it is so heartbreaking that we can no longer see him. I pray that he rests in peace.”
Nam Sung-jin also reminisced about the deceased, saying, “I still can’t believe it.” He added, “I hope he will be remembered as a great elder who was a role model for everyone, always shared his warm heart, and affectionately looked after everyone.”
Meanwhile, Choi Bul-am passed away on the 29th of last month at the age of 87. The deceased, who was loved as a national actor for a long time, has entered eternal rest amidst the mourning of his fellow actors and juniors.
