Kim Min-ja, who bid farewell to the late Choi Bul-am, and her in-law of 24 years, Seo Seung-hyun, also lost her husband 29 years ago.
As actress Kim Min-ja bid a tearful farewell to her late husband, Choi Bul-am, attention is also being drawn to the family history of actress Seo Seung-hyun (83, real name Seo Ok-ja), who has been her in-law for 24 years and also lost her husband 29 years ago.
At 7:40 a.m. on the 2nd, the funeral service for the late Choi Bul-am, who passed away on the 29th of last month, was held at the funeral hall of Seoul Asan Medical Center in Songpa-gu, Seoul.
As the funeral procession carrying the deceased followed the ceremony, which was held privately at the request of the bereaved family, his wife, Kim Min-ja, covered her mouth with a handkerchief and wiped away her tears.
Drama family members visited the deceased's wake, including Kim Hye-ja, who played his wife for 22 years on MBC's *Rural Diary*, as well as Yoo In-chon, Ko Doo-shim, Im Ho, Uhm Yoo-shin, and Lee Gye-in. Longtime colleagues such as Oh Ji-myung, Na Moon-hee, Park Geun-hyung, Kang Bu-ja, and Lee Deok-hwa also paid their final respects.
Amidst the numerous colleagues bidding farewell to the "Nation's Father" on his final journey, there is another veteran actress who has shared a long-standing bond with the deceased's family.
That actress is Seo Seung-hyun.
Born in 1943, Seo Seung-hyun, whose real name is Seo Ok-ja, is a familiar face on the small screen, having been active in KBS dramas such as *Seoul Ttukbaegi* and *Love in the Jujube Tree*. She became in-laws when Choi Dong-nyeok, the only son of the late Choi Bul-am and Kim Min-ja, married her only daughter, Hwang Yu-seon.
The marriage between the two families took place in October 2002. At the time, Choi Dong-nyeok and Hwang Yu-seon were graphic designers who had completed their graduate studies in the United States, and they were scheduled to hold their wedding ceremony at the Seoul Tower Hotel on October 17.
However, the bond between the two began long before their parents became in-laws.
Kim Min-ja and Seo Seung-hyun had been on particularly close terms even before their children got married. In particular, Seo Seung-hyun was so close to Kim Min-ja that she even borrowed and wore the maternity dress Kim Min-ja had worn when she was pregnant with her daughter, Hwang Yu-seon.
The two actresses, who would later become in-laws, shared maternity clothes even before they had children.
The two children also had a connection from their childhood. In an interview with Woman Dong-A in October 2002, Seo Seung-hyun recalled that she had seen Kim Min-ja's son when her daughter was about three years old. After a long period without a chance to spend time together, the two met again in New York, USA, after becoming adults.
In 1997, Hwang Yu-seon, who was studying abroad, became close with Choi Dong-nyeok, who was studying at New York University's Language School. At the time, the two began dating without knowing that their parents were actors with long-standing friendships; they later discovered the special relationship between the two families while sharing stories about their families.
Seo Seung-hyun also expressed surprise, saying she never imagined that the son of Choi Bul-am, who used to come to pay his respects every holiday, would one day become her son-in-law.
They embraced the transition from long-time friends to in-laws with amusement. Seo Seung-hyun joked, noting that she and Kim Min-ja had been speaking to each other comfortably, "Once we become in-laws, I’ll have to speak formally."
Kim Min-ja was also delighted about the marriages of her two children. However, she expressed her wish to hold a quiet wedding ceremony, noting that her children felt burdened by the fact that a marriage involving a famous actor's family was becoming too public knowledge.
However, Seo Seung-hyun, facing her daughter's upcoming marriage, also harbored a hidden pain.
Seo Seung-hyun's husband was Hwang Eun-jin, who worked as a KBS drama PD. Hwang Eun-jin passed away in 1997, five years before their daughter's wedding, leaving Seo Seung-hyun to prepare for her only daughter's marriage without her husband.
At the time, Seo Seung-hyun expressed her regret, saying that her husband had cherished and doted on their daughter more than anyone else during his lifetime, and she wondered how happy he would have been to hear the news of her daughter's marriage.
She met the child once around the age of three, and they met again in the United States to get married, but her father, who would have been happier than anyone to witness this, had already passed away. On November 2, 2026, 24 years later, Kim Min-ja bid farewell to her husband, Choi Bul-am. In 2002, Seo Seung-hyun prepared for her daughter's wedding while missing her husband who had passed away, and now Kim Min-ja has come to say her final goodbyes to the husband who had stood by her side for so many years.
The bond between the two families is also intertwined with their long careers as actors. While Choi Bul-am received national love as Chairman Kim in MBC's *Rural Diary*, Seo Seung-hyun met viewers as a familiar face of rural dramas through KBS's *Love in the Jujube Tree*.
It is also special that these two actors, who were active in long-running rural dramas on different networks, were actually connected as one family through the marriage of their children.
Following Choi Bul-am's funeral procession on this day, a funeral mass was held at Yeouido Cathedral in Seoul. Junior actors such as Kim Hye-soo, Shin Hyun-joon, and Jung Joon-ho paid their respects to the deceased on their final journey, and the funeral procession passed by the Green Umbrella Foundation headquarters before heading to the burial site at Donghwa Gyeongmo Park in Paju, Gyeonggi Province.
However, it has not been confirmed whether Seo Seung-hyun attended the wake or the funeral procession on this day, or in what manner she paid her respects to the deceased.
For Seo Seung-hyun, who recalled the void left by her husband 24 years ago ahead of her daughter's wedding, and for Kim Min-ja, who has now bid farewell to her husband Choi Bul-am, a long-standing bond between the two families remains, one that has continued since before their children were born.
In 2002, while announcing the news that her daughter and Choi Bul-am's son were getting married, Seo Seung-hyun described the special connection that had continued since childhood as follows:
“Come to think of it, it seems the children have a deep bond.”
