Im Jin-mo's son passes away at age 33 after battling brain tumor for 7 years; "When I closed my eyes, I died too."
On 'You Quiz on the Block,' Lim Jin-mo opened up about his longing and heartbreaking feelings for his son, who passed away at the age of 33 after battling a brain tumor for seven years.
The episode of tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' aired on the 21st featured culinary researcher Shim Young-soon, who returned after recovering from pancreatic cancer; basketball player Lee Hyun-joong, who is challenging the NBA as the first Korean in 21 years; pop music critic Lim Jin-mo; and actress Kang So-ra, who is active as a martial arts master.
On this day, the unspoken pain hidden behind Lim Jin-mo's musical career was revealed.
Lim Jin-mo, who owns over 40 bow ties at home, started wearing them because of his son. He said, "One day I wore a bow tie, my son praised me, saying, 'It's fine. Dad, you must wear a bow tie.' I've been doing it ever since. Thanks to that, I catch fewer colds and protect my throat," adding, "More than anything, it feels like I am with my son."
On 'You Quiz on the Block,' Lim Jin-mo shared his feelings. Im Jin-mo revealed his heartbreaking paternal love while sharing the story of his son, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 33 after battling a brain tumor.
He said, "My son left me behind first. A few months before he died, he acted as my manager. From the morning, he picked out a bow tie that matched my outfit. He even drove me around himself while I was sick. I learned a lot from my son."
He then shared an anecdote from when his son worked as an employee at an electronics store. Im Jin-mo said, "When my son was working there, the store manager told me, 'My son came in and suddenly started looking for a ladder. He climbed the ladder among the appliances on display to wipe the top of the refrigerator. He cleaned even the places that couldn't be seen; it was amazing.' Seeing my son, I realized something. I realized that I should work hard at everything given to me. I always give lectures as if my son is listening."
Recalling a day in 2014, he also opened up about his son's struggle with the illness. Im Jin-mo said, "My son told me he was going to the hospital because he had a headache. Up until then, I thought it was just a migraine. But when he brought home the CT results, there were two large brain tumors. That was when his battle with the disease began. He continued treatment for seven years, but eventually, in the summer of 2021, he passed away at the age of 33."
He continued, "If I had known this would happen, I would have taken him to see the beautiful places in Korea instead of just letting him recuperate at home. That is what I regret so much. I was already dead when my son closed his eyes. I went with him, completely and completely. How could I be normal when the son I gave birth to closes his eyes right before my eyes?" He choked up with emotion as he spoke.
Im Jin-mo, who still wears his son's socks when attending important events, said, "I wore them out today as well. I wash them with the utmost care so that my son can wear them until he turns 50. I want to be with my son, even if it is just like this," evoking a sense of profound sadness.
