Im Jin-mo's son passes away at age 33 after a 7-year battle with brain tumor: “Be my manager before I die” (You Quiz)
Music critic Lim Jin-mo shared the story of how his son passed away before him.
Pop music critic Lim Jin-mo appeared as a guest on the 365th episode of the tvN variety show "You Quiz on the Block" (hereinafter "You Quiz"), which aired on October 21.
On this day, Lim Jin-mo explained that he sticks to the bow tie style because of his son, saying, "I just did it, and he told me, 'It's okay. Dad, you must always wear a bow tie from now on.' So, I started wearing bow ties from then on. Thanks to this, I catch fewer colds and it protects my neck. I always wear it when the seasons change. I think of it as being with my son."
After hesitating for a moment, Yoo Jae-suk cautiously began, "From what I hear, in 2021, your son..." Lim Jin-mo cleared his throat and said, "It's okay," before confessing, "My son left me behind and went first."
Im Jin-mo said, "A few months before I died, [my son] became my manager. From the morning, he picked out a bow tie to match my outfit. I don't know if he likes it now. He did all that for me, drove me around, and even though I was sick. I learned a lot from my son. My son became a sales associate at an electronics store. I still can't forget the story the store manager told me. He said, 'Hyun-jun came in and suddenly started looking for a ladder. There were appliances on display, and you know how big the refrigerator is? He climbed the ladder and wiped the top. There are friends like this everywhere. He's amazing.' At that time, I thought, 'Why didn't I know about this? I have to do this. Let's work hard.' That is why I still work hard today. Whenever I give a lecture, I always think that my son is listening from over there."
Im Jin-mo recalled the year 2014, a year he still remembers vividly. "I remember everything," said Lim Jin-mo. "One day, he said, 'Dad, my head hurts, so I'm going to the hospital.' Since he had complained of pain since he was young, I assumed it was just a common migraine. We even had a CT scan, and it turned out there were two large brain tumors. They told us we needed treatment immediately. That was when his battle with the illness began." He revealed that his son received treatment for a staggering seven years.
However, in the summer of 2021, his son passed away at the age of 33. Lim Jin-mo lamented, "If I had known this would happen, I would have taken him to all the beautiful places in Korea to see everything. I regret that we just stayed home for no reason (because of his recuperation). I was already dead when my son closed his eyes. I went with him, completely. How could I be normal when the son I gave birth to closes his eyes for the last time right before my eyes?" Im Jin-mo, who wore his son's socks on this day as well—a pair he always wears whenever attending important events—evoked a sense of poignancy by explaining, "I washed them with the utmost care, and I initially said I would wear them until I was over 50. My philosophy is, 'I wear socks, underwear, and shoes. We are together.' These are those socks. The ones my son wore last."
