“Refugee is our new neighbor,” said Jung Woo-sung, an actor who is working as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Organization. “As Misunderstood can occur in the process of becoming friends, it seems that there are many Misunderstoods in Refugee and our society now.”
Jung Woo-sung attended the Global Refugee Forum Press Briefing held at the Korean Representative of the United Nations Refugee Organization in Jung-gu, Seoul on the 20th, and explained the Misunderstood as the biggest difficulty related to the Refugee issue in our society.
Jung Woo-sung has been a goodwill ambassador since 2015, after being appointed to the United Nations Refugee Organization Honorary Mission in May 2014. He has visited Refugee camps in seven countries, including Nepal, South Sudan and Bangladesh, over the past five years. In June, he published an essay book, "If You Can See What I See," which contains the Refugee activities.
“We’ve been protecting Refugee for five years, and the number of Refugee has increased by 25 million around the world, and ordinary people are still displaced,” Jung Woo-sung said. “In this trend, it will be difficult to see Refugee protection as a problem only for neighboring countries where Refugee has occurred.” In Korea, it has been discussed as an important social problem last year as it suffered from the problem of Jeju Yemen Refugee.
Jung Woo-sung said, "I think I want to find answers quickly as there are various conflicts of interest over the Refugee issue." However, now is the time to think about how to understand the new neighbors. " “There may be Misunderstood and prejudice in the process of getting to know our neighbors, but over time, we can reduce this Misunderstood,” he said. “It is a process of reducing this Misunderstood and fortunately, the gap seems to narrow down at a rapid pace.” “I hope we can look at Refugee with a sense of understanding in social change rather than presenting urgent alternatives or answers,” he added.
