BTS has renewed its seventh place, the highest record of Korean singers on this chart, with its previous "Love Yourself" win. BTS also wrote records for entering the top 10 of the BillBOArdss 200 in two consecutive albums.
In particular, it is the number one Korean album. It is the first time in 12 years that the album released in BillBOArdss 200 in other countries than English has won the top. In 2006, the British popper group "Ildibo" topped the chart with an album "Angkora", featuring songs sung in Spanish, Italian, French, and some English.
BTS' record is comparable to that of international singer PSY (41), who finished second for seven consecutive weeks with his 2012 global hit song Gangnam Style.
BillBOArdss, which chart?
BillBOArdss is the popular music ranking released by BillBOArdss, an American music magazine. It is a combination of the album sales survey of Nielsen SoundScan, a US record sales company, and the number of broadcasts of more than 1,000 local broadcasters.
It is recognized as an indicator of the flow of popular music not only in United States of America but also in each country. Reflecting the trend of the times, we have included Internet download sales since July 2003, and YouTube views and UCC chart scores on the single chart 'Hot 100' since February 2014.
The main charts are the BillBOArdss 200 and Hot 100, which are ranked first by BTS, and the main charts are released every week by subdividing each genre of popular music.
The album charts are based on the album's sales volume: "BillBOArdss 200" for all albums, and "Top R&B/Hip-hop Albums", which only targets hip-hop and R&B-based albums. Usually, the album chart refers to the BillBOArdss 200.
The single chart includes Hot 100 for all singles, and Modern Rock Trax for only modern rock single albums; usually single charts refer to Hot 100.
What is your relationship with Korea?
It was in the 1990s that Korean popular music first made a connection with BillBOArdss. Seo Byung-hoo (1942-2014), the father of pop columnist No. 1 and rapper Tiger JK (40 and Seo Jeong-kwon), who served as BillBOArdss's Korean correspondent, introduced Korean music to BillBOArdss.
Shin Jung-hyun (80), the group Seo Taiji and the children, the rock band Sinawi, and the blues guitarist Kim Mok-kyung (58), who are known as the "Godfather of Korean Rock", received BillBOArdss's attention. And in 2001, the remake version of the hit song "Day" by singer Kim Bum-soo (39), "Hello Goodbye Hello", ranked 51st on the "Hot Singles Sales" chart, and the BillBOArdss challenge of Korean popular music became full-fledged.
In the Hot 100, the group 'Wonder Girls' in 2009 was ranked 76th with 'Nobody' and entered first. The BillBOArdss 200 featured singer BOA (31) in the album "BOA" in 2009 as well as the group "Big Bang" in 2012 as "Alive" in 150th place, and the first album "Girls' Generation - Tatticer" in the group "Girls' Generation" in 126th place. The group 'Two Aniwon (2NE1)'s regular second album 'Crush' released in February was 61st.
BTS ranked 7th in the chart last year with 'Love Your Self' last year and 'Love Your Self' in the chart, and it was ranked first in the history of K-pop.
The team that has been the most successful in the 'Hot 100' has topped 20 songs with the legendary British rock band 'Beatles'. The 'Macarena' of the Spanish duo 'Los del Rio', which is compared to 'Gangnam Style' due to easy dancing, ran first for 14 consecutive weeks in 1995. Among Asian singers, Japanese song "Skiyaki" by Sakamoto Kyu (1941–1985) of Japan took first place in 1963.
The American hip-hop group 'Pa East Movement', which is the mainstay of two Korean-Americans, was ranked # 1 on the Hot 100 in October 2010 with 'Like G6', but it is hard to classify it as Asian music because it is an album produced in United States of America.
Yoko Ono, 85, a Japanese, was on the top of the BillBOArdss 200 in 1980 with "Double Fantasy" working with her husband, John Lennon (1940–1980), from "Beatles", but this is not Asian-led music either.
"Gangnam Style" wrote a new record in 2012 when it finished second in "Hot 100" for the seventh consecutive week. The Asian singer's top five came 35 years after the 1977 Filipino singer Freddie Aguilar's "Anak" came in fifth. "Gentleman," the follow-up to "Gangnam Style," came in fifth and "Hangover" came in 26th.
This is why BTS' "Hot 100" record is drawing attention. There is growing interest in how many title songs "Fake Love" from "Love Yourself" will enter the top spot. BTS' "Hot 100" top ranking is 67th, which was won by the title song "DNA" from "Love Yourself Win"; it is the highest ranking of the K-pop group except Cy.
