Musical actor Nam Kyung-ju's trial for allegedly sexually assaulting his protégé has been postponed to July.
According to the Seoul Central District Court's Criminal Division 13, the first trial date for Nam Kyung Joo's adultery with a supervisee charge was scheduled to be held on June 12, but was postponed to July after Nam Kyung Joo's request for a continuance was granted. During this process, it was also confirmed that Nam changed his defense lawyers.
Earlier, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office's Women's and Children's Crime Investigation Division 2 indicted Nam on May 24 on charges of adultery with a supervisee.
According to police, Nam was sent to prosecutors in February for sexually assaulting a female student, A, in December 2025 in Mocher, Seocho-gu, Seoul, using his social status and influence. A reportedly called 112 immediately after the incident, and while Nam denied the allegations during the police investigation, the police deemed the allegations credible and handed the case over to prosecutors.
Afterward, Nam requested the prosecution to refer the case to the criminal mediation process and attempted to reach a settlement, but it reportedly failed due to the victim's refusal.
Until recently, Nam Kyung Joo, who has been working on his own without an agency, has not made an official statement to date and has deleted his Instagram account to erase all traces of the case, so his appearance at the trial is expected to be highly anticipated. Shortly after the sexual assault case came to light, Hongik University, where Nam was a professor in the School of Performing Arts, held a disciplinary committee and removed him from his position. Nam was an associate professor of performing arts and musical theater at Hongik University's Faculty of Performing Arts until 2025, when he was relieved of his duties just before the start of the school year.
Born in 1964, Nam, 62, is a member of the first generation of Korean musical theater. He made his debut in the 1984 play "Porgy and Bess," and has since appeared in many musicals, including "Lady and the Tramp," "West Side Story," "Les Misérables," "Grease," and "42nd Street on Broadway.
Nam continued her acting career in 2025 with roles in "Hidden Love" and "The Show! Silla - Race".
Meanwhile, Nam Kyung Joo's sexual assault case has also brought to light his past history of two DUIs and one unlicensed driving offense.
In December 2002, Nam had his license revoked due to excessive penalty points for drunk driving. His license was revoked again in June 2003 for excessive points for driving under the influence. At the time, he said, "I had urgent business to attend to, so I had no choice but to drive." The following year, in April 2004, Nam was charged with driving a passenger car owned by his mother without a license on the road in front of the stadium in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, even though his license had been revoked.
It was also reported that he was once taken to Samcheong Education College for being a troublemaker during his third year of high school. In this regard, musical actor Nam Kyung-eup said at a production presentation of the play 'Rain Man' with his brother Nam Kyung-joo in 2010, "My brother is actually a troublemaker," and said, "He even went to Samcheong Education University as a third-year high school student. I attended the same high school as Gyeongju and was the head of the religious department, but I was scolded every day because of my brother."
