Despite apologizing to Park Hee-sun... Controversy continues over the leak of Kim Ji-min's private social media posts
Despite Kim Ji-min’s apology, controversy surrounding the leak of her private social media posts continues.
Influencer Kim Ji-min, who rose to fame through Channel A’s dating show “Heart Signal 4,” recently apologized regarding the private social media posts that sparked controversy, while Park Hee-sun, an influencer from the Netflix show “Solo Hell 5” who was suddenly targeted, has signaled a strong response. Attention is focused on the two because they are both influencers who have gained prominence through popular dating shows and are currently riding a wave of success.
Kim Ji-min recently posted on a private social media account visible only to close friends comments defending former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s declaration of martial law, explicit political views against the current administration, screenshots of conversations where she referred to her own mother using the sexist slang term “kimchi girl,” boasts about expensive gifts received from her boyfriend, and even shared rumors about female dating show participants, including Park Hee-sun, having “sugar daddies.” The situation came to light when these private posts were leaked and spread like wildfire.
The most problematic aspect was the unverified rumors about Park Hee-sun, another dating show cast member, which caused a major uproar. Park Hee-sun became the biggest victim of this situation. As the leak of Kim Ji-min’s social media posts led to secondary harm, the severity of the situation grew even more.
As the controversy spread, Kim Ji-min finally apologized on June 6. On her social media, Kim Ji-min wrote, “As someone in a profession that receives an overwhelming amount of love and attention from the public, I should have always presented a more cautious and mature image. However, I feel deeply burdened that my immaturity seems to have caused discomfort and disappointment to many people,” “I deeply reflect on the fact that I caused trouble while sharing my personal opinions, even if it was in a limited space,” “In particular, I sincerely apologize to artist Park Hee-sun, her agency representatives, and her fans, who were unintentionally harmed and hurt by the so-called ‘Joo Club’ images—which were mentioned in a private context and whose factual accuracy has not been clearly verified. I also extend my deepest apologies to the other artists who may have felt uncomfortable due to my thoughtless remarks.” Kim Ji-min appears to have recognized the seriousness of the situation, acknowledging her mistakes, expressing remorse, and taking immediate steps to resolve the matter. Her statement also included an explanation that some of the posts were not written by her personally and that certain details had been omitted or distorted. Furthermore, Kim Ji-min stated, “Due to the unauthorized leakage of information without consent and the spread of false content, not only I, but also my family and those close to me who care for me are currently facing immense difficulties that are hard to bear,” She also issued a stern warning, adding, “To prevent the situation from worsening further, I am considering appropriate legal action within the necessary scope.”
Park Hee-sun, who had also fallen victim to these baseless rumors, spoke out. The day after Kim Ji-min’s apology, on June 7, she posted a statement on her social media account declaring that the rumors were clearly false. According to Park Hee-sun, she had already filed a criminal complaint against the person spreading the rumors in January—before Kim Ji-min’s post was leaked—on charges of spreading false information, and the suspect was referred to the prosecution in April. “I had decided to respond as quietly as possible, believing that addressing every baseless false claim could actually lead to unnecessary spread,” said Park Hee-sun, who had previously kept quiet about the malicious rumors surrounding her. However, as the rumors were reproduced and resurfaced due to the leak of Kim Ji-min’s social media post, she decided to confront the issue head-on. Although the matter had already been confirmed as a clear fabrication through the investigative process, Park Hee-sun, who suffered secondary damage as her name resurfaced in public discourse, has actively moved to clarify the situation and quell the rumors, while also hinting at strong legal action. Park Hee-sun stated, “I express deep regret over the situation where these false claims are being repeatedly reproduced as the content has recently resurfaced,” adding, “The dissemination of false information, defamation, and the indiscriminate reproduction of such content are clear acts of illegality. We are currently working with our legal team to continuously monitor related posts and distribution channels, and we plan to take strict legal action against any illegal acts that are confirmed.”
Consequently, voices expressing disappointment in Kim Ji-min’s conduct—arguing she was not cautious enough for someone with influence rivaling that of a celebrity on social media—began to emerge. As an influencer in a position where even a single social media post or remark can impact society, sponsoring companies, and advertisers, the release of these inappropriate, somewhat provocative, and extreme comments led many to express their disappointment, saying, “It’s true I was surprised because it’s so different from her on-screen image,” “It’s really shocking,” “It’s a stark contrast to her on-screen image,” “It really takes me aback,” “It’s a classic case of shooting oneself in the foot.” Furthermore, her comments included language that could hurt others, drawing even fiercer criticism. Critics point out that, despite the private and restricted nature of the space, she overlooked the weight of her words given her position in the public eye. This incident serves as a painful lesson that even when high-profile figures use social media privately, they must maintain strict ethical standards.
The public’s reaction to Kim Ji-min’s apology was also lukewarm. Comments included: “It looks like an apology written out of fear of losing sponsorships,” “She’s the one who insulted her family, so why is she making such a fuss about telling the public to exercise restraint?” and “No matter how private the account is, you must always be careful with records that remain online.” “Park Hee-sun is the one who should be filing a lawsuit,” and “This is a lawsuit threat disguised as an apology.”
At the same time, the act of maliciously leaking a private conversation with an acquaintance while hiding behind online anonymity has also emerged as a serious issue. While the inappropriate remarks are problematic, some have pointed out that the fact that a private post was leaked online is an even bigger problem. Many people are expressing concern that private accounts or posts with restricted visibility—set up to protect personal information—have been leaked to the outside world, despite being posted in good faith. As it is expected that posts intended only for specific individuals have leaked to the public, had the incident involved only Kim Ji-min’s own inappropriate words and actions, it would have ended with her facing criticism and taking time to reflect. However, the spread of posts mentioning the real names of celebrities completely unrelated to the matter has led to innocent secondary victims, leaving a bitter aftertaste. This incident has also sparked heated discussions about social media usage.
