SEOUL (Reuters) - Singer and broadcaster Kim Jong Kook has revealed that he almost fell victim to a "double-payment scam" for local experiences during a trip to Dubai.
The singer recently shared a video titled "I almost got hit in the eye...(Feat. Oil Money)" on his YouTube channel 'Jim Jong Guk'.
In the video, Kim Jong Kook visits a gym in Dubai and starts working out while looking at the golden barbells and other exercise equipment. However, the gym's daily pass cost a whopping 120,000 won, and Kim Jong Kook was shocked by the high price.
After finishing their workout, the group went to the buggy ride, which they had booked in advance. After confirming their reservation, the staff guided them to the ride and asked them to pay.
He thought he had made a reservation, but the staff member quoted him a different price than the one he had confirmed at the time of booking and asked him to pay more. "We're giving you a discount," the staff member explained, "and you only need to pay 2,000 dirhams," which is about $880,000 USD.
The acquaintance, who was double-checking the booking details, said, "It's a total of 1900 dirhams (about KRW 780,000)," and Kim Jong-guk explained, "We already booked it, but the price is different from what we thought, so we're checking."
The employee continued to push for payment on the spot. Eventually, Kim was fooled into paying by card. But his acquaintance had already paid, and he said, "You can't do that. We've already paid for everything," he said urgently.
The employee, who knew all the facts, was trying to scam unsuspecting tourists, and not only that, but the company was completely unrelated to the one he had booked with.
"I want my money back," Kim Jong-kook told the employee, "I want my money back. We have already paid," he calmly explained. The employee shamelessly explained, "It's not my mistake," and eventually refunded the extra money.
As he left the store, Kim Jong-guk said, "My eyes were right on target. It wasn't his company's reservation, but they took him to their side and just paid for it." He was dumbfounded.
"I even showed them my reservation history, but they took me even though it wasn't my company," he said.
At the end of the video, Kim Jong-guk said, "You can suffer unexpected damage anywhere overseas," and urged people to check their reservation information and payment details carefully, rather than trusting only the kindness of people.
