'Lion' director Kim Joo-hwan "Communicating with those who are together, part to take in the future"
Director Kim Joo-hwan met the audience with the movie 'Lion'. Amid the challenge following 'Midnight Runners', which had fresh winds in theaters in 2017, it left meaning for a new attempt.
"Lion," released on July 31, depicts the story of martial arts champion Yonghu (Park Seo-joon), meeting with the Guma priest Anshinbu (Ahn Sung-ki) to confront the powerful evil that has left the world in turmoil. Park Seo-joon, who breathed in 'Midnight Runners', also joined 'Lion', and veteran Ahn Sung-ki joined to add weight. Woo Dohwan succeeded in making a strong impression as a black bishop who spreads evil.
"Even in 'Midnight Runners', I thought it was new to say that two young people were solving something, and that was also a battle of good and evil. Actors was able to complete the attempt. I was wondering how to make many people enjoy it as something new. In the movie, the moment the father of Yonghu died is the beginning of fantasy, a story that unfolds on the border between reality and fantasy. "
Director Kim Joo-hwan said, "I wanted to show something new in the story, along with the technical attempts I have not seen yet through 'Lion'.
The basis for that idea was the presence of Ahn Sung-ki, who played An Sin-bu. Director Kim Joo-hwan said, "Although the movie can be scary at first, I thought that the part where the two characters of Yonghu and Ansinbu come in contact with each other is universal. I would like to have such a priest. It is not easy to live, but it is not as hard as the dragon, but the burden of the individual depends on the position of each person. I thought that it was a safe woman who could be warmly treated when I was shaken and trusted. "Ahn Sung-ki played such a role." The scenes and ambassadors in the play were also able to be completed with a lot of help, as well as Actors and staff. The importance of communication based on this experience is that I will continue to take it with director Kim Joo-hwan, and I am also committed to it. "It is called collective intelligence. I think I should be able to refine the creativity of various experts like the director of the film and the director of the lighting like a sculptor. In addition, the acting side had to worry about what is the most natural thing for the character to play, and in order to do so, I have to keep observing Actors. Especially, it is an honor to work with someone like Ahn Sung-ki, so I keep communicating and asking for opinions. Also, even if (Park) Seo Jun is younger than me, he has more experience in various media. It is a very difficult task to establish collective intelligence, but I think that good things can come out when there are people who have such good hearts and affection for each other. It's up to the director to make sure everyone's abilities are up, because I think Midnight Runners is good, and everything that could be shown in the summer theaters is lucky. And I think that I can try a new one with Lion this time, and that I have to communicate a lot, and I think it is the part that I should keep going."
Director Kim Joo-hwan, who really liked movies and was impressed, wanted to make a movie that could give such a Feeling to the audience with the intention of "Let's give it back as much as I received," went to New Zealand during his junior high school days. He majored in international politics at Georgetown University. Since then, he has returned to Korea and has been attracting attention as a special career, including working in public relations teams and Korean film investment teams at the investment distributor Showbox. Following independent films "Goodbye My Smile" (2010) and "Koala" (2013), she emerged as Chungmuro's most anticipated director at once with her three-year commercial film debut "Midnight Runners." Through this 'Lion', I was able to rethink the way of the filmmaker I am walking. "I've felt a lot this time, 'You always have good ideas. How you make this is your job.' The more you do, the harder it is. I think the know-how accumulated while working on 'Lion' will be a big nutrient for me, and there are various reactions to making and releasing movies in front of the world. I want to make a lot of works in the future, and I am always thinking about the degree and color of newness, and I am going to continue to enter into various opinions whether it is good or not.
