Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon delivered the BTS medal while the 572th Korean Day celebration was broadcast live on KBS and MBC.
On the morning of the 9th, a 572-stone Korean Day celebration was held in front of the King Sejong statue in Gwanghwamun Square. KBS and MBC organized live broadcasts of the celebrations respectively.
The ceremony was held in honor of scholars who tried to keep Hangul in the Japanese oppression, such as Choi Se-jin, a writer of the 'Hoonmongjahoe' who wrote how to read Hangul, Joo Si Kyung who used the name 'Hangul' for the first time, and Jeon Hyung Pil who kept 'Hoonminjeongeum Haeryebon'.
The concert was a musical "Oesol", which depicts the life of Choi Hyun-bae, an independent activist and Korean scholar from Ulsan. Oesol is a creative musical co-produced by Ulsan City and Oesol Musical Company, and won the Jury Award for the first time as a domestic work at the Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF) in July.
“The Korean language learning center, Sejong Institute, has spread to 174 places in 57 countries,” said Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon, who attended the ceremony. Young people around the world write down BTS’s Korean songs and sing along. “The government has decided to give the BTS a cultural medal,” he said.
“The Moon Jae-in administration is trying to re-enact the joint compilation of the Korean-American dictionary, and let’s make a commitment to King Sejong today to work together between the two Koreas. “We will do our job to keep and refine the words and writings of the Korean people. The government will take the lead,” he said.
After the live broadcast of the celebration ceremony, KBS 1TV will broadcast a special documentary on Hangul Day, The Elite of Wonderful Hangeul Country, and MBC will broadcast a special documentary for Hangul Day for Our Happy Communication.
